Can Prop Firm Rules Change After You Buy?

Firms amended rules and splits on live accounts through 2025 and 2026. No firm reviewed binds a version of its rulebook to the account you bought.

Updated 2026-07-31Cluster Rule mechanicsIntent INVESTIGATIVELength 2243 words

Yes. Across the firms in this review, rules, splits, leverage and payout caps were amended during 2025 and 2026, and several amendments applied to accounts that had already been bought. No firm we reviewed publishes a versioned rulebook bound to an individual account, and none publishes a change log or a diff of its terms. Topstep made eight documented changes in five months.

This is a question about contract mechanics, not conduct. Amending published terms is ordinary commercial practice, and every dated change below is either published by the firm or reported in trade press. The record is dated throughout: when a change landed, whether it reached existing accounts or only new ones, and what a buyer can verify afterwards. We describe amendments as amendments, quote firms’ stated reasons in their own words, and attribute no purpose or motive to anyone.

For every rule category that can end an account, see the cluster hub on everything that can close a prop account.

What do the terms say about changing the terms?

This is where the published record is thinnest. On no firm’s published pages in this review did we find a commitment that the rule set in force when an account is purchased is fixed for that account’s life. That is a negative finding — an absence of a term rather than the text of one. In the general case the rulebook is a live document attached to the firm, not a version attached to the account.

Two published clauses set the surrounding contractual position, quoted here as written.

Blueberry Funded’s terms name the counterparty directly: “These Terms and Conditions are agreed between you and Blueberry Markets (SVG) LLC trading as BlueberryFunded (the Company)” (Blueberry Funded terms and conditions, read 31 July 2026). The contracting entity is registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines; the group’s ASIC-regulated Australian entity is not a party to it.

The5ers’ terms state that on termination for cause “any accrued balance of profits or rewards shall be canceled and forfeited” (the5ers.com/terms-and-conditions, read 31 July 2026). Those terms are governed by Israeli law, with exclusive jurisdiction in Israeli courts.

Neither is an amendment clause. Together they describe the position of a buyer who disagrees with one: the counterparty is the firm, the forum is the firm’s chosen jurisdiction, and as set out in when a payout can be denied, there is no ombudsman, compensation scheme or external appeal body in this category. Both facts sit in the terms rather than on the sales page.

What changed, and when?

Every row is dated. The Topstep chronology alone records eight changes between 25 November 2025 and 28 April 2026; the rule and payout ones are listed here. Rows sourced to a firm’s published page carry the link; rows resting on trade-press reporting or a dated announcement are labelled as such.

Which changes were bound to a purchase date?

Both patterns are in the record.

Bound to the purchase or registration date. Topstep’s withdrawal of the 100%-of-first-$10,000 term on 12 January 2026 grandfathered earlier registrations, and its 28 April 2026 cut to payout caps applied to new $50K and $100K accounts. FundedNext’s split cut from 90% to 80% applied to accounts purchased from 12 January 2026. Blueberry Funded’s 12 March 2026 changes applied only to accounts bought after that date, leaving the firm running two parallel rulebooks across one portfolio of live accounts.

Per-account rule versioning is therefore achievable. A firm can hold two rule sets at once, and one does. What no firm publishes is a guarantee that it will.

Applied to accounts already open. FundingTicks announced rule changes on 17 December 2025 that applied to traders who had already passed, and the brand wound down 32 days later, on 18–19 January 2026. Alpha Futures reduced payout limits on the simulated side retroactively in late June 2026. Apex’s 1 March 2026 replacement was comprehensive enough that any description of the product written before that date describes something that no longer exists.

Neither — the product ended. Seacrest Funded announced on 4 February 2026 and closed all accounts and positions two days later, with a refund window to 28 February that excluded breached, gifted and inactive accounts. ATFunded suspended on 6 June 2026, promising full refunds and pending payouts.

What did firms say when terms changed?

Where a firm gave a reason, these are the firm’s own words.

Alpha Futures, on closing its flagship Premium plan on 12 July 2026, stated that the plan had produced more than $25 million of payouts in two months and that the firm was carrying ”significant operating losses”. On the same day NinjaTrader and Tradovate terminated their agreements with the firm. Approved but unpaid payouts were initially converted into refunds of the account fee; after public reaction on 16–17 July the firm moved to paying in batches, with the first batch set at 10% of the amount owed.

ATFunded (ATFX), suspending its prop product on 6 June 2026, said it would ”pause, stabilise, and evaluate alternative models that better align trader success with company sustainability”, and undertook to refund purchases and settle pending payouts in full.

Seacrest Markets, ending prop operations in February 2026, was described by Finance Magnates as ”the first prop trading operation to fully transition to a broker-backed model” (Finance Magnates). That is the publication’s characterisation of the move, not the firm’s.

Two of the three attribute the change to the firm’s own economics. We report them as the firms put them and draw no conclusion about any individual account.

For context, attributed to no firm above: of 376 prop firms in one industry database, 84 are no longer active and 30 more show no sign of operating — a third of the market in under two years, on Finance Magnates’ count. See firm closures 2024–2026.

Can you verify what the rules were on the day you bought?

Generally not, from the firm’s own site.

No firm in this review publishes a change log, a version history or a diff of its rules, terms or payout policy. Pages are updated in place. The closest thing to a version marker we found is metadata: FTMO’s trading-objectives page carries a dateModified of 13 May 2026, which tells you the page changed but not what changed.

So a rule as it stood on a purchase date is generally not recoverable from the firm’s site. The current page is the only published page. A buyer who wants a record of the terms they bought under has to make it at purchase, by saving the pages.

Comparisons date quickly and silently. Apex’s 1 March 2026 replacement removed six published rules and added three; a comparison written in February 2026 describes a product that no longer exists.

The parameters amended most often are also the ones that decide the outcome. The record above concentrates on splits, payout caps, leverage, weekend and news permissions and consistency percentages — the terms of getting paid rather than of passing. Which of those apply to the funded stage at all is set out in what changes the day you get funded.

What is missing from the record?

Our reading is that the missing feature is narrow and specific: a rule version bound to the account for its life, with a public diff between versions. Nothing in the review suggests any firm offers it, and two things make that a real gap rather than a wish. Blueberry Funded already runs two rulebooks keyed to a purchase date, so the mechanism exists; and the changes above are already published one by one. What is absent is the record connecting them.

What can a buyer do about it?

  1. Save the pages you bought under — the rules, the payout policy, and the help-centre articles carrying the funded-stage parameters. They are archived nowhere else, and the firm’s site will not keep the old version for you.
  2. Read an announcement for a purchase date. Several 2026 amendments applied only to accounts bought after a stated day, and the wording is what tells you which side of it you are on.
  3. Check the date on any comparison, including this one.
